FAQ – EP for Schools

Answers to common questions about the online Educational Psychology consultation and formulation service provided to schools and local authorities.

What is epforschools?

epforschools is a nationwide online Educational Psychology service providing consultation, psychological formulation and EHCP-ready reports. Work is commissioned directly by schools and local authorities only.

Do you carry out cognitive or standardised assessments?

No. The service does not use formal cognitive tests. Instead, it is based on a formulation-led approach using consultation, observation (where feasible), school information, developmental history and structured rating scales.

Are EP assessments valid without psychometric testing?

Yes. Cognitive testing is not required for EHCP needs assessments. Reports based on triangulated evidence and clear psychological formulation are consistent with HCPC, BPS and SEND Code of Practice expectations and are routinely accepted by local authorities.

What does the assessment process involve?

Online consultation with staff, review of documents and work samples, optional parent or carer consultation, remote observation where appropriate, and a written psychological formulation leading to outcomes and provision recommendations.

What does the report include?

A clear explanation of needs, how they affect learning and participation, suggested outcomes and detailed provision that can inform Section F of an EHCP and school-based planning.

How long does the process take?

Once information has been provided by the school, consultation, formulation and the written report are usually completed within around one week, depending on availability and document turnaround.

Will local authorities accept reports without cognitive scores?

Yes. Local authorities must consider all relevant evidence. Formulation-based EP reports are widely used to support EHCP needs assessments and reviews.

Can parents refer directly?

No. All work is commissioned by schools or local authorities. This ensures information is coordinated and recommendations are realistic within the educational setting.

Do you diagnose conditions such as autism, ADHD or dyslexia?

No. The focus is on understanding educational need and advising on provision. Where a diagnostic assessment may be helpful, the report can suggest appropriate referral routes, for example through health or local diagnostic pathways.

Can the report be used for Tribunal?

Yes. Reports are written to professional standards and may be included as part of an evidence bundle. Attendance at Tribunal hearings is not offered as part of this service.

How is information shared securely?

Schools receive a secure Microsoft OneDrive upload link for each pupil. Files can be uploaded but not browsed, and all information is managed in line with HCPC expectations, GDPR and UK data protection law.
